The Butterfly Movement Club

Telling Our Stories Through the Body

The Butterfly Movement Club is a creative wellbeing programme rooted in physical theatre, designed to build confidence, resilience, and self-expression in girls aged 11–16 from Black and Global Majority backgrounds.

Using the body as a storytelling tool, participants explore how movement can express what words sometimes cannot.

This is not just dance.
This is embodied storytelling.
This is reclaiming space.
This is voice through movement.

What Is Physical Theatre?

Physical theatre uses:

  • Gesture

  • Posture

  • Breath

  • Rhythm

  • Spatial awareness

  • Ensemble movement

to communicate emotions, experiences, and identity.

Through guided exercises, improvisation, and structured movement pieces, the girls create powerful narratives about who they are and how they move through the world.

Why the Body?

For many young girls, especially those navigating race, identity, and social expectation, emotions live in the body.

Through physical theatre, they learn to:

  • Release stored tension

  • Build body confidence

  • Strengthen presence and posture

  • Develop emotional awareness

  • Trust their instincts

  • Stand grounded in who they are

Movement becomes a language.
The body becomes a voice.
